Grave Marking Ceremony To Honor Revolutionary War Patriots Buried In Nelson County VA

At 1100 hours on 10 October 2026, the General Daniel Morgan Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution will conduct a grave marking ceremony to honor four Revolutionary War Patriots buried in Nelson County, Virginia.  The ceremony will include presentation of the national colors by the SAR Color Guard, a recitation of their patriotic service and unveiling SAR grave markers placed in honor of the four patriots.  The honorees include the following:  James McAlexander, Senior, (1717-1798) for patriotic service; and his two sons, James McAlexander, Junior (1741-1783) who served as a Captain in the Albemarle County Militia; and, Alexander McAlexander (1756-1840) who served as Orderly Sergeant of the Albemarle Militia and was at the Battle of Yorktown, Virginia in 1781.  Also honored is Captain Samuel Woods (1727-1781) who was Commissary Officer for the Quartermaster’s Division of Virginia Troops, Buckingham District, November, 1775.

The ceremony will take place at Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 5016 Rockfish Valley Highway (Hwy 151), Nellysford, VA 22958.  The Rockfish Presbyterian Church and its Cemetery was constructed on land donated by John Reid, James Robertson and Samuel Bell on July 10, 1745. The oldest known sites are those of Mary Woods who died in 1779 and Samuel Woods who died in 1781.  The cemetery has 554 designated burial locations: 145 reserved; 112 locations available; 297 persons interred; 45 veterans interred.
